Tips on Climbing Mount Batur

1. The Best Time To Trek

The best time to climb is in the dry season. Because when climbing in the rainy season, the track will be very slippery and steep. In general, climbers start climbing at 3:00. This was done so as not to miss the sunrise above the peak.

2. Prepare Your Physics, At Least A Week Before Climbing Date

Physical preparation before climbing a mountain is important, because the track on Mount Batur is quite draining and the weather can reduce your immunity, so that some altitude sickness can interfere with your adventure if you are not physically fit.

3. Mountain Climbing Equipment

Pay attention to the climbing equipment you bring, adjust to the rocky and sandy track typical of Volcano. We recommend using a capable mountain shoe, field clothes that are all-round and wear gaiters.

4. Climbing Guide

It is important for you who feel a novice climber, you should use the services of a guide or be in the right group, at least one person has climbed on Mount Batur. This is to minimize the risk of getting lost or other undesirable things.

5. Mental Questions

After physical, equipment and climbing friends. Next is the mental problem. How you see the hiking trail is easy or easy depending mentally. Many climbers who are mentally strong are able to reach the top of Jayawijaya and many climbers whose mentality is not strong cannot reach the top of Volcano.

6. Safety first

In every climb, the summit is just a bonus, while the main goal is to go home safely. Therefore, if conditions are not possible, such as friends who are sick or in bad weather, you should not force the will to get to the top, anyway the peak will not run anywhere.

Extraordinary experience

We did the Sunrise Batur trip and couldn’t recommend it enough, it was amazing! Our guide was very informative, friendly and patient with our group members who were less fit. The sunrise itself is very stunning, the sky is very beautiful and an amazing experience. Seeing monkeys in the crater is an added bonus!

Early bird

Absolutely amazing !! This is a must for anyone visiting Bali. Like a fun and rewarding trip, I have the most amazing photos of this trip and we met some really great people on our trip too!

We went with a called Bali Ventur Trekking and they were fantastic! A group of fun people and we even went up the sand on the side of the volcano on the way back too!

Basically we were picked up from Ubud, given a lot of advice about our diving area to the village of Lake Batur, suggesting about hot springs, being placed in this truly beautiful niche, boutiques, amazing bungalows by seeing lakes and volcanoes in the crater also with this fertile living room with suitable views. We stayed at night, then for the trip we had a guide and breakfast cooked in steam volcano and only generally a very pleasant day and all for $ 35! Absolute bargain !!

I recommend group options as a great meeting with new people, but they also offer private tours. Also if you have ordered all your accommodations then you can pick up at your hotel the next day too so you don’t need to stay overnight, but I definitely recommend it because we met some locals who were very cool and only loved wondering around the village on the lake before the trip.

Either way, make sure you are booked on one of these !!

Worth it!

Sure you get a local guide for the trip, take the right footwear and jacket (quite windy at the top). Guides usually provide flashlights, so don’t worry if you don’t have them. There are normal and easier routes that meet halfway up the mountain. We take more difficult routes and easier routes. The journey above in the dark is beautiful under the starry sky. Most tours give you the choice to include breakfast (usually sandwiches with bananas, boiled eggs and coffee / tea), but you can also take your own food. This is a sandy trip that will take around two hours each road (the last 30 ‘on a steep road). The view at sunrise is really useful!

Worth the effort but be prepared
If you were doing this trek during the day and under a moderate temperature, it would be easily doable. However, make no mistake, these are not your standard conditions of trekking. You start in the middle of the night (around 3.00-3.30 am) so you will probably be quite sleep deprived. So make sure you have a rest the evening before. If this is your first time, get a guide. If you have done this before, you can just follow the crowd. There are hundreds of people in a line going up the only path there is so you can’t miss it even if you wanted to. Make sure you have water with you and small snacks to keep you going. Also, I saw so many people doing this with the wrong clothes and shoes… there is nothing worse than seeing someone going up a volcano in flip flops! Don’t take this lightly, it is a trekk. You will need proper walking boots/shoes and comfortable clothes. Also, yes this is Bali and when on the base of the volcano you are not cold, once you get up there, you will freeze so make sure you have a jumber/hoody with you. Bare in mind, you will have to use a torch with one hand so you will need the other one for balance and assistance when climbing steep rocks (especially towards the end). Do not take a carrier bag with you (Yes… I saw people doing that!) Have a small backpack for your personal belongings and food/drink.
The trek up to the “sunrise point” takes around 2-3 hours depending on your pace. You can go even further up but the view is the same and we didn’t bother. The trek down is the biggest challenge as you won’t have anywhere to step on, most of the track is slippery and you will have to balance on volcanic ash, tiny slippery rocks and big pointy rocks – so focus! Many people try to show off and run down but I would advise against it. Make sure your knees can take it because you will be relying on them a lot – I have a small weakness in one knee and the trek killed me. Took a day (and a massage 😉 to recover. The view is really nice but not the best sunrise I have ever seen to be honest (according to our guide, it was a really good day). The sun goes up really quickly so make sure you are there in time – blink and you’ll miss it!
Also, don’t forget to visit the entrance to the cave and the crater on your way back. They are a nice experience if you have not been on an active volcano before. Don’t expect lava! (heard some people being disappointed – lol) A crater is just a dent at the top of the mountain that gives off a bit of heat and steam here and there.
There are no toilets obviously so be prepared to go in the open. There is a hut that made us breakfast and hot drinks at the top but as it was organised by our guide I am not sure if you can just show up and purchase something – but in Bali everything has a price so looks sure that if you ask nicely and show them some cash you won’t be left starving 😉
Enjoy it!

Sandy trekking
Need to take a guide. Take some water and/or juice, good footware and if you don’t like it could, bring a jacket with you. If you have a flash light ok. If not, the local guides will provide it. Expect 1,5 to 2 hours walming and climbing. One way.

A Must Do!
We went there specifically to climg Mount Batur for sunrise and we were not disappointed. The climb in itself is not that easy but manageable though. Unfortunately when we reached the summit in time for sunrise it was very cloudy but eventually did clear.
Thanks Ventur

Great Experience, Perfect Sunrise!
This hike was a very interesting hike for us. We got picked up at about 2 am from our hotel, great stuff for pancakes breakfast and we started hiking with a flash light. It was definitely a first to engage in that kind of hike. The trail was a bit tough and rough especially on the way up and I don’t think I would have been bold enough to do it if it was not still dark when we started. Once we reached the top and experienced the brilliant awesome wonder of God’s creation, the sunrise, it was at that time that I felt it was worth it. It is a picture perfect scenery up that second most active volcano in Bali. I actually hiked this volcanic mountain in June of 2015. I would recommend it to adventurous travelers. Well worth it!

You’ll work for the views
We did the 4 hour hike up and down the mountain. It was 2 hours each way and it was much easier coming down than up (of course). I can’t lie, I was not fully prepared for it. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but about half way up I wanted to throw myself , or push one of my friends (lol), off the side. Once we made it up, it was all good. We used Bali Ventur and the guides were most helpful. We were fed breakfast and when dawn came, it was all worth it. The cost was about 450,000 Rupiah/person which was good price, they picked us up from the hotel, dropped us off, water throughout the trek, and breakfast, I think it was well worth it. They were even willing to go up a bit higher if you wanted to trek a bit more, which I declined.
