It can be cold no matter where you go, so it’s important to remember to pack something warm on top.
A hot boiled egg between the palms of your hands is good, but not enough to warm the whole body.

The Ultimate Guide To The Mt Batur Sunrise Hike, Bali (2023 Guide)
Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur, is located in Bali, Indonesia. About 2 hours from Canggu/Seminyak and 1 hour from Ubud. The district where the volcano is located is Kuntamani district. Its height is 5600 meters above sea level and 1717 meters high. Mount Bator, like Mount Agung, is an active volcano. Although Agung’s last eruption was in 2019 and Bator’s last eruption was in 2000.
Mount Batur is a sacred stratovolcano at an altitude of 1,717 meters in Kuntamani, Bali. Batur Volcano is believed to be more than 50,000 years old and more than 4,000 meters high before it erupted 29,300 years ago. The eruption led to the collapse of the magma chamber, which created two concentric calderas. Today, Mount Bator is marked by a collapsed peak known as a caldera.
Mount Batur is still an active volcano, but is heavily monitored and safe to climb. The last eruption of Mount Bator took place in 2000, and you can see the vast plains created by the eruption. You can explore the long area on foot, by jeep or motorbike.
Here are some important facts before you head out to climb Mount Batur! It is important to know that there are two different routes to climb Mount Bator. The “longer” but less steep version takes 1.5 hours one way and 11 km out and back. A short but fast trail takes only 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the summit and is about 7 km from there. We did two routes, the longer version in April 2019 with the amazing Four Elements Adventure guides and the shorter version in October 2021.

Trek Distance and Duration: The total distance to climb Mount Batur is 7 km for the short route and 11 km for the long route. If you’re in a hurry, the short route will take you anywhere between 45 minutes and 1 hour. The longer route takes you almost twice as high as the one through the forest, while the shorter route starts at Pura Pasar Agung at an altitude of 1,250 meters.
Difficulty and Deviation: Climbing Mount Batur is done by many people, young and old. However, you have to go through many biases and different stages. The long track has 700 meters of line over 11 miles. The smaller version has 500 meters of incline for a walk of over 7 km. I wouldn’t call it a difficult climb, it’s moderate but can be difficult in some parts. It all depends on your fitness level and how well you are used to walking. However, watching the sunrise is worth the climb!
The best and only way to get to the top of Koh Bator is with a sunrise reservation. Mount Bator cannot be done alone.
