Mount Batur, also called Gunung Batur, is located in Bali, Indonesia. It is a 2 hour drive from Congo/Seminyak and about an hour drive to Lost. Kontamani district is the district where the volcano is located. It is located at an altitude of 5,600 feet above sea level which is 1717 meters high. Mount Bator is an active volcano, like Mount Agung. Although Agung’s last eruption was in 2019, and Bator’s last eruption was in 2000.
Mount Bator is a sacred stratovolcano in Bali at an altitude of 1717 meters in Kontamani. The Bator volcano is believed to have existed for more than 50,000 years and was even more than 4,000 meters high before its first eruption 29,300 years ago. The explosion caused the magma chamber to collapse to form two calderas that merged. Today, Mount Bator is marked by a collapsed caldera.

The shortest route will take you anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour if you have a fast pace. The long route will take you twice as long as you will first walk a bit in the forest, while the short route already starts at an altitude of 1250 meters at Pura Pasar Agang.
Difficulty and trend: many people, young and old, do treks to Mount Batur. However, you have to overcome inconsistencies and uneven steps. This long road has about 700 meters of line and more than 11 kilometers of walking. The shorter version is a 7km 500m walk. I wouldn’t say the hike up Mount Bator is hard, it’s moderate but it can be tough at times. It all depends on your fitness level and if you’ve learned to run. As for the best time to climb Mount Bator in terms of sunrise, you should be happy depending on the season. We had great sunshine in April with a low tide. When we went in October it was perfectly clear with no clouds and we could see all the way to the volcanoes of Lombok and East Java! July, August and September are the best months if you want to enjoy the winds. In other months you should be lucky enough to find the magic blanket of low hanging clouds that really make you feel like you are in heaven! This question makes sense because it all depends on your fitness level and travel experience. The Mount Batorka sunrises in 2019 and 2021 were spectacular by comparison. Also because we did a different and shorter route in 2021. All in all I think the Mount Batur trek is a moderate trek that can be done by anyone with no trekking experience. Of course on the way you walk in the dark, so you have to turn around completely and need a lamp or flashlight.
And yes, it is stressful in some places and yes your heart rate will go up. But the view is very useful! There are technical sections with loose rocks and crumbling sand but not too big. Just watch your steps and you’ll be fine. The locals even do this trip in flip flops, although it is not recommended…

In total you will walk for about two hours, so you will need at least 1 liter of water. Can be cold at the top especially when it’s windy. So you’ll also need a (light) coat.
