As my first time rafting, this was an awesome and fun experience. The views along the river are gorgeous, with waterfalls, jungle scenery, and rice terraces.
So here are the problems I had with the company. E-mailing to reserve was quick and easy. They confirmed I was to be picked up in Ubud by a driver and it would take about an hour to get to the start site. Left 8:15, arrived 9:30. Because I was a solo traveler, they paired me in a boat with 3 other people…. who did not arrive until 10:35 am. So I sat at their office for over an hour twiddling my thumbs. If they knew the other people wouldn’t arrive until then, why did I have to leave my hotel at 8? Possible theory– on the way to the river, my driver kept asking me if I had tried the Luwak coffee, and pointed out a place I could stop and try coffees and teas for free. I politely declined and explained I don’t drink coffee, nor tea. I think they’re instructed to bring us there to try to trap tourists into buying the coffee. (Shout out to Gede, my driver, who was super funny, awesome to talk to, and best of all, a fast driver!!)
Next the rafting experience– about 2/3 of the way through the journey, there is a man-made dam and you drop about 15 feet. Prior to getting to the dam, the guide pulls the raft over so that we can position ourselves safely for the drop. We were instructed to sit on the floor of the raft. As I was in the middle of the raft, he told me and the other person to prop our feet up on the corner to the side of the front passenger’s head, and cross our feet. Another raft guide from a different company was floating past us and he gave my feet a double take, and said to me “don’t cross your feet there”, and looked at me as if I were crazy. He then said something in Balinese to my raft guide, who then said, “oh, maybe you can put your feet here instead”, and positioned our legs to brace the front seat. Seriously?? Our guide didn’t know where to put our feet? In hindsight, if I had propped my feet in the corner as he originally instructed, my legs would have went flying up in the raft and I would have fallen out, because I was only holding onto a side rope with 1 arm. You need your feet to brace some part of the raft to prevent you from going over.
Finally, our raft. Covered in patches. I was afraid every rock we hit, our raft would pop a hole and deflate. There are 2 other companies that also provide rafting services on the Telaga Waja river and I envied their shiny new red rafts. I chose this company (which is actually called Bali International Rafting in Bali) mostly because of the cheaper price, and it’s true, you get what you pay for.
