It’s hard to not hear about Mount Batur when visiting Bali. Flyers and signs are everywhere advertising hikes up to the top. The hike is praised by travelers who have been there. Tour operators will try to sell tours to everyone who walks by.

It is located in the northern portion of the island and next to Mount Agung, a volcano that offers a more challenging hiking option for the adventurous.

Many tourists to Bali make Mount Batur sunrise hike in Bali a top priority on their list. It is a 1,717-meter (5,633 foot) tall volcano that rises from the ground and offers a stunning view of the surrounding areas. The Danau Batur is a large crater lake located between Mount Agung and Mount Batur. Once the lights turn on, the steep climb and early rise are worth it.

Fun fact: Mount Batur once belonged to a larger volcano. The volcano erupted in the most powerful volcanic eruption in Earth’s history around 30,000 years ago. A part of the volcano collapsed and formed the caldera in which Mount Batur is located. Keep in mind that Mount Batur was once the stomach of an extinct volcano.

What to Expect When You Do Mount Batur Sunrise Hike In Bali

I got up at 3:00 am to get my stuff ready for Mount Batur. I was able to get out of bed quickly because the excitement buzzing around my body felt like electricity.

I was in Ubud, about an hour drive from Mount Batur. Go to Toya Bhungkah at the base to get a guide. Once you’re done warming up, it’s time for you to begin hoofing it up to the top of the volcano.

It is approximately seven kilometers (4 miles) long with more than 500m (1,640 feet), of elevation gain. The Mount Batur sunrise hike in Bali in first half will be completely dark, with only a headlamp providing light. This only adds to the wonder when the darkness is lifted. It’s all revealed in one huge reveal and it is stunning.

It will take approximately two hours to reach summit for most people. You can do it faster, depending on your fitness level. The terrain can be steep and sometimes the footing can be difficult. The hike is manageable with the right breaks.

My guide, I believe, woke up with the goal of setting the fastest time to summit. It was good that I was wearing my running shoes.

My biggest problem was with my feet. As we trudged up the side, the rocks kept slipping as I stepped on them. My guide saw this and pointed me to the more stable areas.

Soon, the sun began to rise and the sky became brighter.

I took a seat and brewed a cup of coffee to warm me up. Then, I waited patiently for the sun to rise.

My feelings of ecstasy increased as the sun rose in a cloud. It was a feeling of ecstasy to feel like I was on a small island, in the Pacific, seeing something that I only had seen in photos and that I had to work hard for.

The sunrise from Mount Batur’s summit has been one of my favorite sunrises. It was like being in a Bob Ross painting. Many colors were used to paint the sky and there were happy little houses and trees that stretched out under me for miles. I could not have been happier.
