Have you thought about how to go to Bali? A scooter is the easiest way if you are comfortable riding.
Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur, is located in Bali, Indonesia. It is a 2 hour drive from Canggu/Seminyak and about an hour drive from Ubud. The area where the volcano lies is Kintamani County. It is located at 5,600 feet above sea level, 1717 meters high. Mount Batur is an active volcano, as is Mount Agung. While Agung’s last eruption was in 2019 and Batur’s last eruption was in 2000.
Mount Batur is a sacred volcano in Bali with a height of 1717 meters located in Kintamani. Batur Volcano is believed to be more than 50,000 years old and was more than 4,000 meters high before it first erupted 29,300 years ago. This eruption caused the magma chamber to collapse, forming two concentric calderas. Today, Mount Batur is marked by a collapsed peak known as a caldera.

Mount Batur is a very active volcano, but it is monitored and safe to climb. The last eruption of Mount Batur was in 2000, and you can see the volume of lava that was created during the eruption. You can also explore the country on foot, jeep or motorbike.
Before you set off on the Mount Batur trail, below are some basic facts! It is important to know that there are two different ways to climb Mount Batur. The “longer” but less steep route takes about 1.5 hours one way and is 11km out and back. And the shorter but steeper trail only takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top and 7 kilometers out and back. We went both ways, then a long one in April 2019 with the famous Four Elements Adventure Guide, then a short one in October 2021.
Trail Distance and Duration: The total distance of Mount Batur is 7 km round trip for the short route and 11 km round trip for the longer route. The short route will take you between 45 minutes and 1 hour if you are fast enough. The longer route will take you about twice as far as the first trek through the forest, while the shorter route starts at about 1250 meters at Pura Pasar Agung.
Difficult and challenging: the Mount Batur trail is undertaken by many, young and old. However, you have to go through the program with many different steps. The long track is about 700 meters of line over 11 kilometers of walking. The short part is a 500m climb over a 7km walk. I wouldn’t say Mt Batur is difficult, it is moderate, but it can be difficult in some areas. It all depends on your fitness level and if you are used to hiking. The view of the sunrise is worth the climb though!

The best and only way to reach the top of Mount Batur is to book a sunrise hike. You cannot climb Mount Batur alone. If you want a Mount Batur sunrise tour that includes transportation from your accommodation, I highly recommend booking with Four Elements Adventure. They have English speaking guides with excellent service and strive to give you an unforgettable experience on Mount Batur.
Another big plus is the secret route they take to avoid the crowds. Mount Batur is very popular and most guides take the normal route so you will be walking in lines with many others.

The best time to hike Mount Batur is the dry season. It starts from May to October, but another dry season can be good. During the rainy season it can be dangerous as the rocks can be slippery or slippery. It also leads us to wear good hiking shoes with good grip. But I will understand more about it later with “What to prepare before going to Mount Batur”.
As for the best time to hike Mount Batur according to the height of the sun, you have to be lucky depending on the season. We had a good sunrise and light fog in April. When we went in October it was very clear and cloudless and we could see all the way to the volcanoes of Lombok and East Java! If you want low hanging clouds, the best months are July, August and September. Some months you have to be lucky to find a magical blanket of low clouds that will make you feel like you are in heaven! Always check with your guide for the best day to go if you are flexible with your schedule.
This question is a bit subjective as it all depends on your fitness level and hiking experience. It was interesting for us to do the Mt Batur trip in 2019 and 2021 to compare. Also because we made a different and shorter route in 2021. Overall, I think Mount Batur is moderate and anyone with little or no hiking experience can do it. Of course, you are walking in the dark way up, so you have to walk with full attention and you need a headlamp or flashlight.
And yes, it can be steep in some places and yes, your heart rate will increase. But the view is so worth it! There are some special areas with flat rocks and sand that can be slippery, but without large bumps. Just focus on your steps and you’ll be fine. Locals also do this hike with flip-flops, of course it’s not recommended…
Mount Batur Volcano Sunset Trekking Tour In Bali
You will walk for about 2 hours in total, so you will need at least 1 liter of water. It can be cold at the top especially when it is windy. You also need a (light) jacket. Wear shoes that are comfortable for you to walk in. Bring a bandage in case of illness or other minor injuries. A flashlight or camera is essential early in the morning. The roads are rough and in some places you have to climb a bit. If you find yourself hungry after an early morning workout, pack a (healthy) snack to keep your energy up. Most tours include breakfast, which includes hard-boiled eggs cooked in the heat of the volcano, a small banana, and a hot coffee or chocolate drink. Nothing fancy, so I recommend taking snacks with you.
And of course, if you’re climbing Mount Batur, take some amazing photos of yourself
