Mount Batur, also known as Gunung Batur, is located on the Indonesian island of Bali. It is a 2-hour drive from Canggu/Seminyak and about an hour from Ubud. The area where the volcano is located is the Kintamani region. It is 5,600 feet above sea level and 1,717 meters above sea level. Mount Batur is an active volcano like Mount Agung. Although the last eruption of Agung volcano was in 2019 and the last eruption of Batur volcano was in 2000.
Mount Batur is a sacred Balinese stratovolcano with a height of 1,717 meters and is located in Kintamani. Batur volcano is more than 50,000 years old and was over 4,000 meters high before its first eruption 29,300 years ago. This eruption caused the magma chamber to collapse and form two concentric calderas. Today, Mount Batur features a collapsed peak called a caldera.
Mount Batur is still an active volcano, but it is highly monitored and safe to climb. The last eruption of Mount Batur was in the year 2000, and you can see large lava fields from the eruption. You can also explore the lava fields on foot, by jeep, or by motorbike.

Here are some important facts before you start your trip to Mount Batur! It is important to know that there are two ways to climb Mount Batur. The “longer” but less intense version takes about 1.5 hours round trip and 11 kilometers round trip. The shorter but steeper path takes only 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the summit and 7 kilometers round trip. We did both itineraries, the longer version in April 2019 with amazing tour guides from Four Elements Adventure and the shorter version in October 2021.
Hiking distance and duration: The total hiking distance at Mount Botur is 7 km out and back for the short route and 11 km out and back for the longer route. If you cycle yourself, the shortest route will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour. The longer route will take you twice as long as you travel a bit through the jungle, while the shorter route starts at around 1250m in Pura Pasar Agung.
Difficulty and Inclination: Many people, young and old, trek to Potter’s Mountain. However, you have to overcome the slope and many uneven steps. The longest route is about 700 meters over 11 kilometers on foot. The short version has a slope of 500 meters for a distance of more than 7 kilometers. I will not say that the road to Mount Putor is difficult, it is moderate, but it can be difficult at some points. It all depends on your fitness level and how you are used to walking. However, the view of the sunrise is worth the climb!

As for the best time to climb Mount Batur to catch a stunning sunrise, you have to be lucky depending on the season. We had a beautiful April sun with a bit of a hanging mist. When we went in October it was crystal clear and we could see all the way to the volcanoes on Lombok and East Java! If you want low clouds, the best months are July, August and September. In other months, you’ll be lucky enough to get a magical blanket of low-lying clouds that make you feel like you’re in paradise! If you are flexible with your schedule, always consult your guide on the best day to climb.
