Distance and duration:

The total distance of the Mount Batur hike is 7 km out and back for the shorter route and 11 kilometres back and forth for more of the route. The shorter route can take between 45 minutes to 1 hour if you’re at speedy pace. It will cost approximately twice as long since you will first walk through the forest. On the shorter route, you begin from a high point of 1250m at Pura Pasar Agung.

If you’re looking to take a full day trip in Kintamani You can take advantage of the Mount Batur Bali trekking tour along with coffee plants. You can you could even include water rafting on your tour itinerary!

The best time to climb Batur’s Mount Batur

The best time to go Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking volcano is in the dry season. From May through October, however any time when it’s dry can be a great time. In the time of rain, it could be dangerous because the possibility of slides can arise and rocks can become slippery. That brings us to the issue of hiking in high-quality shoes that have great grip. I’ll discuss the subject later, starting with “What to prepare before you hike Mount Batur”.

It is the ideal time to go hiking on Mount Batur in terms of an amazing sunrise, you need to be lucky based upon the time of year. We enjoyed a spectacular sunrise, with a little light fog hanging in the month of April. In October, when we visited, it was totally clear with any clouds , and we could see until the volcanoes of Lombok along with East Java! If you’re looking for low hanging clouds, the best months to go are September and August. Other months, you’ll have the chance of getting the most amazing cloud cover that makes one feel like they’re in heaven! Always consult with your expert about the ideal day to climb when you’re flexible with your timetable.

How difficult can you make it to do Mount Batur sunrise trekking?

The answer to this question is a bit subjective because it is all dependent on your fitness level as well as your experience the outdoors. We found it interesting to go on this Mount Batur sunrise hike in 2019 and 2021 in order to compare. Additionally, we took an alternative and shorter hike in 2021. Overall , I believe that it’s a good idea to do the Mount Batur hike is a moderate hike, and is feasible for anyone with no experience hiking. Naturally, on the way up you’ll be hiking in dark, and you’ll need to pay all-time attention and the aid of a flashlight or headlamp.

What do you need to know before you begin your hike on Mount Batur

  • Water is plentiful
  • Put on a jacket
Make sure you wear good hiking shoes. Sneakers are also effective.
  • Band-aids (in the case for blisters..)
  • Headlamp. Your guide may also have one available for you.
  • Energy drinks
  • Camera and lenses
  • Drone

The total hike will be about 2 hours, which means you’ll require at least one Liter of water. It’s possible to be cold at the top of the mountain, particularly when it’s cold and windy. Also, you’ll require an (light) winter jacket. Find shoes that you feel comfortable to walk in. Bring band-aids in the event of minor wounds or blisters. A flashlight for your camera or headlamp is essential in the initial hours. The terrain is uneven and at times you need to climb up a bit. If you notice that you’re hungry following your workout in the morning you should bring some (healthy) snacks along so that you can keep your motivation up. The majority of trekking trips include breakfast, which is made up of eggs cooked in boiling water using the heat from the volcano, bananas, hot chocolate drinks or coffee. It’s not fancy at all, and this is why I advise you to take a couple of snacks with you.

Tips on Climbing Mount Batur

1. The Best Time To Trek

The best time to climb is in the dry season. Because when climbing in the rainy season, the track will be very slippery and steep. But we also do in raining season. In general, climbers start climbing at 3:00. This was done so as not to miss the sunrise above the peak.

2. Prepare Your Physics, At Least A Week Before Climbing Date

Physical preparation before climbing a mountain is important, because the track on Mount Batur is quite draining and the weather can reduce your immunity, so that some altitude sickness can interfere with your adventure if you are not physically fit.

3. Mountain Climbing Equipment

Pay attention to the climbing equipment you bring, adjust to the rocky and sandy track typical of Volcano. We recommend using a capable mountain shoe, field clothes that are all-round and wear gaiters.

4. Climbing Guide

It is important for you who feel a novice climber, you should use the services of a guide or be in the right group or private, at least one person has climbed on Mount Batur. This is to minimize the risk of getting lost or other undesirable things.

5. Mental Questions

After physical, equipment and climbing friends. Next is the mental problem. How you see the hiking trail is easy or easy depending mentally. Many climbers who are mentally strong are able to reach the top of Jayawijaya and many climbers whose mentality is not strong cannot reach the top of Volcano.

6. Safety first

In every climb, the summit is just a bonus, while the main goal is to go home safely. Therefore, if conditions are not possible, such as friends who are sick or in bad weather, you should not force the will to get to the top, anyway the peak will not run anywhere.

Heavenly view

Great tour to Mount Batur. Our driver met us at 4 am; We hiked Batur with a young tour guide. Not too steep for mountaineers. Beautiful sunrise. After that stop for coffee back to the hotel at 10:30. Recommend.

Not as good as in Java

After trekking 2 volcanoes on Java (Mount Bromo and Ijen crater), riding Mount Batur is not a difficult task because I only need 1.5 hours to reach the point of view for sunrise even though I am not a person who exercises. Disappointing, the sun rising on Mount Batur is not as good as on Mount Panharga (located near Mount Bromo in the Tengger caldera) because it is partly blocked by mountains, but cute monkeys are made for it.

Helpful but difficult

This climb is very steep and has parts of rock and loose sand. You follow your group’s pace and stop anytime, I am in good shape and it is quite difficult for me but it is pushed because it doesn’t take too long .. Go to the second peak which is incredible .. Must go. We ran down the sand on the way back which was great fun! But get down with difficulty kneeling. Don’t use sandles !!! Even conversing is not the best, this is a direct hike to the side of a volcano! And it freezes at the top before the sun comes up so bring a sweater. Very useful and beautiful! Sooo worth it. Extraordinary.

Glad I woke up!

To give you an illustration: I am 30 years old, I do not do sports but I am also not really “out of shape”. For me.;. it’s not easy!

You start by walking normally for about half an hour before starting to get steeper. The road is very rocky. When I saw it go back down in the light I was surprised I was going up like that in the dark … Pretty dangerous 🙂

After a while you end up at the first “point of view”. Here you decide whether you want to stop or go far up. I chose option 2 … and geez, the last part of the hike was definitely worse on the slippery sandy slope that slides down every time you take a step.

Once awake, we wait another half hour until sunrise. The view was good even though it was quite cloudy on the day I was leaving.

On the way down you can see the monkey guarding the mountain.

Hard work but fantastic view

This is not something I normally do, but the friend we are traveling with really wants to leave. I did almost kill him when I was in the middle of the climb but, like the most painful sport, in the end it was worth doing!
You have to leave the hotel at 2 am (beforehand if you are from South of Ubud) – it’s almost debatable whether to go to sleep. Thank God I went to bed at 8:30 and actually rested 5 hours and really felt uneasy when riding the bus. The first stop is the coffee and breakfast stop – nothing out of the ordinary except coffee is coffee at 3:30 in the morning! Take a jumper. It doesn’t freeze (I wear shorts) but you will get cold only in a T-shirt. And wear decent shoes – trainers or boots. The toilet at the breakfast stop is a pit toilet (there are actually no western toilets on this trip – and take toilet paper).

You then get to the parking lot at the foot of the mountain. The journey starts very gently (they give you a torch) and you wonder what happened. Then it starts to become steeper, sometimes slippery and sometimes awkward – some big steps that really test your glutes. It’s worth taking a backpack for water, even though it’s hard to carry it. I am 39 years old and not fit but not too fat. I was having a hard time. My friend is much fitter (he regularly does the boot camp) and find it easier but still not easy.
When you reach the top, you begin to see the light in the sky. You can walk from the first cafe and get a better view. It was very beautiful and I’m glad I went. They provide breakfast there but it can’t be eaten – a banana sandwich with stale enough bread that is hard to swallow and hard boiled eggs (it should be cooked in hot volcanic water but I prefer to cook it on the stove!). Walking down is much easier but you have to be careful not to slip.

Simply Amazing !!! (literally and figuratively)

We are very passionate about this and the whole experience is amazing. We were picked up from our villa in Ubud around 2:15 am and about an hour and a half drive to the foot of the volcano. Has the era of the best drivers, and guides; Made of.

Made made sure we were fine at every step. Climbing the volcano is not too difficult and it’s worth every effort! It took us a little over an hour to reach the top, and we had some boiled eggs and hot milk while waiting for the sun to rise too. The view from the summit was so real, we stood in silence just admiring the sights, colors and sounds. Going down the mountain can be a little scary with a few slips here and there but Made holds our hands to make sure we walk well.

  * We would recommend bringing a jacket because it can get cold near the top.

  An amazing experience overall !!!

Worth the trip!

Even though personally it’s not the easiest because I don’t have any previous trekking experience, it’s definitely worth the trip! It’s dark when we get there so a good torch light is very important. Don’t forget bottled water and jackets to keep warm because it can be very cold.

You are required to hire a guide because they will not let you in without having to hire a guide. We took a package with an agent so everything was paid for from our hotel pickup at 2am for a local trekking guide with a light breakfast which was basically bananas and boiled eggs.

The temperature gets better after you start moving and takes us about a few hours to reach the top with several stops along the way to rest. Ascend is quite rocky and requires proper footwear so closed shoes are definitely recommended.

Our guide was kind and friendly and made sure we could continue because climbing can be very tiring.
After the above, you can get breakfast in this small hut. But beware of monkeys and wild dogs that are there because they can threaten especially monkeys so try not to feed them.

The best part of the whole Bali trip

The view from the top of Mount Batur is truly amazing. The journey to get there itself is an adventure. Must leave hotel in Legian at 1.30 am, followed by one and a half hour drive to the starting point. Then hike another 1-2 hours in the dark to the top. It turned out to be easier than expected. People who are healthy enough should be able to complete the climb in one and a half hours. The prize is a spectacular view of the sun rising over the caldera. Down easier but no less dangerous. Overall, I had fun. The driver and mountain guide was very friendly and helpful.

Extraordinary

We booked with our usual tour guide in Kuta. We were picked up at 130am to the bottom of the volcano around 330am and met our guide. Our guide was amazing he was very helpful in everything possible.
Show us things that even helped a monkey jump over my partner’s shoulder. I practice 3 times a week and my fitness is pretty good but I struggle with some parts of this road having a step up. Wear good shoes, you will need them. We had an amazing time and our guide was very happy to have done this. We had breakfast and had to feed the monkeys too. We wish you a good fitness and have fun!
