I was in Bali as part of a family trip and I decided to take a day off and hike he mountain by myself. Everything from start to finish was amazing, I was picked up right on time (1:30 in Seminyak), the people in my tour group were awesome and the hike was breathtaking.

In terms of clothing, I would recommend a short sleeve base layer as the hike up can become very tiring. That being said, it would be worth bringing a jacket and long pants as waiting at the peak for the sunrise can get very chilly. In terms of shoes, make sure you bring something closed toed and a good grip as the path consists predominantly of loose rocks and gravel. Whilst it was a challenging hike, I do not consider myself a ‘fit’ person in the slightest so I would probably recommend this hike to anyone who thinks they have the ability to climb it.

I actually wanted to spend a bit more time talking about my tour guide. The following is long and potentially uninteresting so feel free to skip it if need be.

My tour guide name was Kadek (not even sure if I’m spelling this correctly). At the end of our five hour hike I had learnt a lot more about Kadek’s life and I never thought it would have affected me the way it has. Kadek first started climbing Batur when he was just 11 years old, I was shocked to find out that he was only 19 and had been working as a tour guide ever since he was 16. Kadek climbs this mountain every day and has to buy a new pair of sneakers every 2 weeks as he is unable to afford a pair of proper hiking boots. He has never left Bali but dreams of travelling the world when he gets the time and money. His family lives in a hut near the mountain and he and his brother work to support their family. He shares a room with his brother and they sleep on the floor, waking up at 2am every day to take tourists like me up to Mount Batur. I asked him what his parents do and he says that they are old and unable to work, so you can imagine my shock to learn his dad was actually the same age as mine. After telling him his dad was not old at all, he responded “old people in Indonesia are not the same as old people in Europe.”
I later found out that he and his brother work this hard to support their younger brother and sister. They use their earnings to send them to school in a country where education isn’t free, so that in the future, their siblings will not have to work as hard as their older brothers do.
Despite all this Kadek is one of the most spirited and joyful people I have met. He was constantly smiling and laughing even though I complained the entire two hours going up. On the way down he would often run ahead with his arms outstretched yelling ‘fflllyyy!!’ Reflecting on myself at 19, I definitely did not have the same sense of responsibility and love Kadek has shown towards his family. He also reminded me just how lucky I am to have been given the life I have but also encouraged me to be more optimistic no matter what my circumstances are. At the end of the hike I made sure to tip him as much as I could and hopefully he will be able to afford a proper pair of hiking boots soon. This is probably a useless review for a lot of you, but for those who care I would really encourage you to get to know your tour guides, as I’m guessing Kadek’s story is just one of very many. If you’re also feeling particularly generous, I would also prepare some cash to give to your guide as a little will go a long way for them.

Thanks and I hope you enjoy your hike!

Guide and driver were very friendly and the hike up was thoroughly enjoyable. The guide was also knowledgeable about the area and the driver helped us get to know Bali better. Overall an excellent trip!

We were young couple of Australian 30 year old, we did this trip as a part of short holiday in Bali and it was one of the highlights of our whole trip in Bali.

We were staying in Om ham retreat Ubud, the driver found us easily without any guidance from us or hotel staff. We were picked up promptly in time 2:20 am as we agreed at 2.30 am, that one plus value then drive safety till meet or extremely fantastic guide. The hike was tiring, but more achievable if wear some proper boots.

A day before ahead to the volcano, we brought our own snacks and energy drinks, it absolutely work but our guide gave us water and breakfast on the summit and a cup of hot chocolate plus seasonal food. He even cooked the eggs in the steam volcano and make banana sandwich as well. There is cold, definitely bring jacket will be useful and once sun come up get very hot again walking back down in the sunshine.

On our descent, our guide ( Forget his name) lead us to the monkey who live in the crater, and walk on the narrow path on the rim of crater, the views from here absolutely stunning, you can capture amazing landscape.

The next trip we did is soaked the hot springs after were a great choice to realized tight muscle and clean from the dusty of volcano. My driver lest stay as long as we want and we got free snacks and drinks as well. The next we went to coffee plantation, it’s a good end once wake you up from tiring hiking + hot spring, charging energy by free taste of coffee and tea absolutely a reward.

Overall was great, tour include everything and there are no hidden costs, we got so much for our money by 65$ cost each and definitely exceed expectation. To be honest, all in all, wroth paid money, wake up and sacrifice sleep.

I and my friend booked our Mount Batur sunrise tour through Mount Batur Sunrise trekking Ubud as we saw has fantastic TripAdvisor reviews. We were picked up in our lodge 2.30 am by our awesome driver. During on the way to the mountain, who let us sleep till where we started our hike. When we reached to the base of Mount Batur we were met by KetutWajib, our fantastic Trekking guide.

Ketutwas the best guide we have asked for, he let us take a time during on the way up the mountain. He also helped us up the tricky rock and ensuring us everything okay, he made our trip felt comfortable with. The sunrise of course exceptional (exceed expectation) and millions thank to KetutWajib that serve us as his family, truly feel like our second home in Bali. Ketut also knowing well of photograph, he shoot fantastic photos of the landscape and beautiful spots.

Finnaly we back down to the base and our driver was waiting there then dropped back to our lodge. He know we feel tired and he let us sleep the whole way and wake us in the lobby. Mount Batur sunrise tour was a fantastic trip, this tour made perfect by our fantastic guide and driver.

My twotips here is bring a spare jumper or jacket as it is cold at the summit at 5.30am, wearing proper shoes and good shocks. Thanks so much!

I thoroughly enjoyed the hike and the sunset at the top was well worth the 2am wake-up! I would 100% recommend anyone to take the opportunity to climb Mount Batur for the sunrise.

My criticism lies more with the company, as I didn’t feel that it was great value for money. We were unlucky with the guide we had in that he brought his children along to sell drinks at the various stopping points up the mountain, so spent more time talking to them in Balinese than he did with us. I didn’t feel that he added much to the experience so I left with a bit of a bitter taste as we could have booked a taxi and just followed another group up the mountain for 1/4 of the price.

    01/07/2017

Although we had a very early start, the sunrise and the views you get from the top are very much worth It.
We strongly recommend to get a guide called Sami: she is very energetic and fun, and she sure makes her company part of the experience. She was very caring with our sun.
Everyone knows her in the area!!

Because we were in Bali 3 days only, we wanted to cram as much as possible into one day in the center of the island as well adventure trekking. Mount BaturTrekking was extremely responsive via email and ensured by WhatsApp, they organized a trip that met our needs and exceed expectation.

Our tour in 3 days Hike Mt. Batur, saw the rice fields, watching sunset and Kecak at Tanah Lot and last day Beaches + Watersport. It was great to customize everything from picked up at Airport, Trekking, Temple and Water sport as well. Trekking guide and driver were super friendly and professional + hospitalized. I highly recommend working with this company.

    30/06/2017

Third time to Bali and we booked sunrise tour & rafting recently, it was best outdoor activities we did. Collected by early morning 2.30 am by punctual driver in our lodge in Ubud. We were introduced to our guide named Wayan Dados and who lead us along up Mount Batur.

Took 2 hours yo the top from where we start, Once reached at the top, Wayan our guide took us to a nice seating place on the west which less crowded.

While enjoying stunning views, he served Banana sandwiches, eggs and hot coffee as well. He then took us to explore entire tom crater where we can capture beautiful landscape, he told us history of the volcanic eruptions then reachedcar park at 9am.

Another think that completing our trip is Whitewater rafting, Rafting in Telaga Waja was a great experience which was 16 km long. There is lunch provided after rafting. At 14.30 pm we reachedhotel safety, overall this is the best deal you can get for Rafting & Trekking with such exceptional service. Must do!!

    29/06/2017

I meet Jero Susun through trip advisor and decided to engage due he has good feedback received from travelers across the world. This was our trip to Bali. Right from the reservation by WhatsApp then picking us up at the hotel, Jero Susun was punctual and extremely hospitable person. Fist he introduced us to itinerary of sunrise trek Batur and safety drive.

Once we reaching the base point of hike, his uncle Ketut Saji gave us full trekking equipment and short briefing before departure. The hike us to the summit was tiring and got several brakes before made it. Beautiful landscape such as caldera, lake and volcano completed the stunning place.

The descent hot a bit challenging but everything still manageable, proper hiking boots would be hood but sneakers still okay. Jacket would be useful as on the top can be bellow than 12 degrees, careful with monkeys on the crater, they van steal your belonging, definitely worth to visit.

    29/06/2017

I was quite hesitant to climb mount Batur due to the fact I was being lazy. I am so glad i talked myself into doing the trek. It is amazing once you are at the top, the most magical sunrise ever. The climb up was very busy, but our guide was very helpful. It is cold which made it much easier to climb. I did many treks in Malaysia at Bako National Park which were much more challenging. The climb down was tricky due to my shoes having very little grip (I slid the whole way). But overall it’s not hard, you have to do this trip. Absolutely breathtaking.
