Beautifull moringhike. Such a good view at the rop as the sun came up. Also you get to see the monkeys and can feed them with with fruit. Helpfull driver Wira and a good personal guide, Bargo, who told us allot of the area.
Had a good experience. Our driver Wira was on time and took us safely from our villa i Ubud to the foot of mount Batur for the sunrise hike. The hike was steep but the views were amazing. Our guide Bargo made sure we had a great trip providing us a simple breakfast and some serious photographing skills. Very satisfied!
The hike was a great experience made even better by our guide Kriss. Though there’s quite a lot of people at the top, there’s plenty of room to watch the sun rise. The experience was hugely enhanced by Kriss, who was very friendly and went above and beyond for us. The hike back was quite crowded but there is an alternative, less crowded route that is slightly more challenging but way less crowded and shorter.
Great experience would recommend. Count yourself lucky if Kriss is your guide.
At first, I’ll admit I was skeptical about booking this hike. I’d heard that Mount Batur can get crowded, and as someone who loves hiking, the thought of being stuck in a slow-moving group didn’t appeal to me. But from the very start, everything about this tour dissolved my doubts.
The pickup was punctual and private—just my friend and me. At the park entrance we were welcomed with tea and coffee, before meeting our guide, Kriss, who handed us our gear.
The ascent.
We began our hike under a sky still heavy with stars. Because it was only the three of us, we could move at our own rhythm, steady but strong. The forest around us breathed in silence, only the crunch of our steps and the cadence of our breath breaking the dark stillness. In that rhythm, the mountain revealed itself not only as a physical challenge, but as an invitation to presence. To climb was an active meditation; to listen was to remember the earth’s quiet wisdom.
Kriss was attentive, checking often whether we needed rest, adjusting the pace to ours. The paths were clear, the night serene, the climb demanding but meditative.
The summit.
We reached the peak in just under an hour, well before sunrise. Far from feeling “too early,” it was perfect. We sat with breakfast and hot tea while the heavens stretched open above us: a sea of stars brighter than I had ever known. In that immensity, a truth revealed itself; we are smaller than dust, yet still belong to the same fabric of existence. The mountain’s grandeur reflected our own fragility, yet also our quiet strength.
As dawn stirred, the stars surrendered, and the horizon began to burn with color. Kriss guided us to a higher spot, steam rising from the earth, where we watched the sun rise gently out of the sea, a radiant red circle ascending with timeless grace. The fire of the sun awakening both land and soul.
Kriss is also a fantastic photographer. He knew every hidden angle, every viewpoint, and captured moments for us just before the crowds arrived.
The descent.
On the way down, the main route grew crowded, but Kriss quickly shifted us to a quieter, more challenging trail. This alternative path rewarded us with sweeping views of valleys, lakes, and distant peaks. The vegetation changed as we descended, each layer offering its own vibes, its own palette. Where the ascent was cloaked in darkness, the descent unveiled the living face of the mountain.
It was fun, beautiful, grounding. To walk down in sunlight after climbing in darkness is to realize the completeness of the experience: the circle of night and day, silence and laughter, the unseen and the seen.
Last but not least…
Mount Batur reminds that to climb is to return to earth, not escape it. Every step serving as a reminder that we are rooted in something greater, the same pulse that runs through stone, flame, sky, and breath.

Pick up and drop off from our hotel was efficient, felt safe in the car with the driver and he was also answering some of our questions there and back.

They sell bars and water and drinks etc up top; but you might prefer to bring your own.
