This guide will show you where is Lempuyang Temple, how to get there and what you need to know before you travel! It is located on the steep slopes of Bali’s Lempuyang Mountain, with stunning views of Agung Volcano in the distance.

Pura Lempuyang Bali Temple has become internet-famous thanks to its magnificent ‘Gate of Heaven’, which looks like a picture frame of the sky and Agung volcano.
Lempuyang Temple is not only one of Bali’s most treasured Instagram photo spots, but it is also considered one of the island’s oldest and most revered temples.
Definitely worth a visit, even if you’re not an Instagrammer. There’s more to this Balinese temple than Heaven’s Gate.

Unfortunately, this spectacular view attracts many tourists every day. There is now a line and if you are lucky you may have to wait over an hour at the gate to take a picture. it’s crazy.
If you are looking for peace and quiet, the good news is that Lempuyang Complex has other temples (7 in total) that can be visited by hiking uphill and they are not crowded. about it. It’s not as iconic as the first gate, but it also offers great views of Mount Agung.

A circuit of all the temples would take several hours, but the main temple with its famous gate and stairs is just a 5-minute walk from Pura Lempuyang parking lot.
When I first visited Lempuyang as a solo traveler in 2017, it was completely empty except for a few locals. I was the only tourist! The social media effect has quickly changed the landscape.

Lempuyang is considered one of the holiest Hindu temples in Bali and in my opinion one of the most photogenic. The stairs (above) are also great for photos. Located in Karangasem Regency

The Mirror Trick

You may have seen photos of this place on Instagram. The gate and clouds are perfectly mirrored on what appears to be water (“Heaven’s Gate”).
I hate to say it, but we don’t have a pool here. All of these reflected images are trick shots taken with a pocket mirror. A local genius sits here all day painting the same picture for everyone who visits.
Still, I think the pictures are just as good. I’m fine with that, but if you help me take a lot of nice pictures, give me a little tip.

Lempuyang Shuttle

A new shuttle bus system will be deployed in Lempuyang from 2022 to ease congestion and traffic on the steep and winding road. This was the best solution as the parking lot at
Temple does not have enough space for a car, but unfortunately there is an additional charge to visit the temple. Shuttle by
minibus costs IDR 80,000 round trip (ie IDR 40,000 one way). It’s a short road about 5 or 10 minutes by car.

Best time to visit

If you want to get the best photos, you should come to Lempuyang before sunrise when Agung volcano is not yet covered by clouds.
At this time there are already many tourists, so we should arrive before sunrise. Probably around 5:00 or 5:30 am. Lempuyang Temple opens to the public at 5:30 am.
If you don’t like photography and want to avoid the crowds and get some good shots, go in the afternoon when most of the Instagrammers have already left.

Entrance Fee

Previously there was no entrance fee to Lempuyang Temple, instead a small donation could be made.
As of 2022, the entrance fee to Phra Lempuyang is Rp 55,000 per person, which includes the sarong. Also, locals will help you take pictures at the famous gate. Tipping is optional, but if you’re helping us take lots of great photos, tipping is recommended. Please note that there is a new round-trip fee of IDR 50,000 for the shuttle bus to car park. This is paid in addition to the main entrance fee.
As you can see, Lempuyang Temple is certainly not cheap by Balinese standards, but I guess that’s what happens when the place gets too crowded.
