White Water Rafting Near Ubud Bali – Rafting in Bali is safe for everyone. That is my conclusion based on my own observation. I have seen families with small children go rafting as a fun theme park ride. But somehow, I was nervous. I was worried about falling into the river. What if I fall alone while my friends are still in the boat unharmed? What happens if I hit rocks while falling; I know they are ridiculous fears, but they are still my fears. In my previous rafting experience in Bali in 2008 with my friends, it was fast and challenging. I think these two worlds are completely different: boy rafting and girl rafting. My initial fears were unfounded. Rafting with girls was more calm and slow, because we told our guide not to drop us or get drunk, lol!

Anyway, let me summarize my rafting experience from the beginning. Before we left Bali, we booked a Rafting activity directly with Sobek. Sobek is the most established rafting provider in Bali so we feel safer joining them. Sobek has 2 rafting spots: Ayung and Telaga. We chose Ayung because he is level 2 and 3, while Telaga is level 3 and 3plus. After all, we are city girls and we just want to have fun like girls. For Ayung, Sobek offers the choice of Classic or Light. Classic includes insurance, shower, buffet lunch, and transportation to/from the hotel, while Light only includes insurance and a fried rice meal. We chose Classicone and paid Rp 400k for domestic and USD 70 for foreign. The length of Ayung rafting is about 11 km.

Things to bring: wallet, phone, 1 set of dry clothes (shirt, pants and underwear), shampoo, face wash, comb, hair tie or glasses (if you forget to bring them, you can ask of the guide), snacks for consumption during the trip, memory card or flash drive (if you want to buy your photos). I suggest wearing walking slippers, or not slippers, but it’s best not to wear expensive ones, in case you get lost in the river.

Since we chose the time slot in the morning, we were picked up from our hotel around 9 am. The trip from our hotel to the starting point is approximately one and a half hours. The van is not Sobek’s real car, it is subcontracted. The car was supposed to be the only one to send us to and from the hotel, without intermediate stops. Send us to the starting point and wait until you reach the finish line.

To begin with, we kept our valuables (phone and wallet) in a waterproof bag and carried them with us. The rest of our cows were kept in a large bag, locked and kept in the car. Sobek provides a waterproof bag and a large bag. Then they gave us life jackets, helmets and paddles. Then, we begin our journey up the 500 steps to the river. When we reached the bottom, the guide explained to us some basic commands like forward, backward, left, right, and stop. When the briefing was over, we boarded the ship. The waterproof bag takes care of our guide, so we can focus on paddling!

The rafting gets off to a leisurely start with a few photo stops. Overall, the route is relatively flat, with currents and unevenness in some places. If you get bored or hungry, which I doubt you will, you can buy expensive food and drink at the shops located around the river. Our guide stopped at one of the tents to let us rest. We bought expensive drinks at the store and even bought one for our guide. Agetus is the contribution of local people.

In addition to local shops, there are many tourist centers built on the banks of the Ayung River. Some of them are: Kupu Kupu Barong and Ritz Carlton. My friend pointed out that there were several carvings on the river wall and asked how long they had been there. Our guide said they were relatively new, probably dating back 2-3 years.

Ayung River is not only used by Sobek as a rafting spot. There are many other companies that offer rafting there. It is very common to pass boats from other companies. If that happens, the war will begin! Yes, it’s a battle. Each rower can block the opponent’s rowers. I was very motivated to soak all my opponents to absolute moisture, but my skills just weren’t there. My friends laugh at my efforts to win fights, but I’m proud of it 🙂 My friend Ju in the back row is a great fighter, just one touch from him can make you wet.

Some distance before the last point, our guide told us to smile and wave at the photographer taking our picture. So his friend Vina proudly greeted his politician character.

At the last point, we got off the boat and helped ourselves to ginger tea. There is also a bathroom. We rested for a while before climbing the 230 steps to street level. At the top of the stairs, we cross the street and finally arrive at the shower and buffet area. We took our things from the car and went straight to the bathroom.

A free towel was given to each of us at the entrance to the shower area. The shower area has some curtained (aka doorless) shower stalls. Some curtains are broken due to prolonged use with little privacy. There is soap inside the shower cubicle, but you must bring your own shampoo, conditioner, face wash, etc. A plastic bag to put dirty clothes can be requested from the staff at the entrance of the shower (the same staff that gives out the towels).

Fresh from the shower and hungry for some “intensive” activity, we hit the buffet. The buffet consists of steamed rice, fried noodles, fish satay, perkedel (mashed potato chips), chicken curry, potato mayonnaise, tempe, capcay (vegetables), crackers, chili, fried plantain, team coffee and water. Soft drinks are also available but with an additional charge.

After the buffet, we went to the photo booth to look at our photos. The CD costs Rp 200k, while the printed photo costs Rp 70k. We decided to buy the CD only. The staff also offered to make another copy on our hard drive or memory card free of charge, if the CD was damaged. Unfortunately, neither of us had a spare memory card or hard drive. Luckily the CD was working when we got home! And with that, we are back. Instead of going back to the hotel, we asked the van to drop us off at Kuta, as we wanted to explore Kuta on our last night in Bali. Sob. The story of our last night will come later!
